The Stephenville Police Department made application for grants early in
2009 and was awarded approximate funds of $250,000.
The Texas 421 Grant is funded by traffic fines, probation and parole fees,
and various other fines as defined by the Texas State Legislature. Amount
awarded by grant: $57,420.00. Amount matched by City: $23,000.00. This grant
will replace outdated in-car camera systems in patrol cars. The previous
system used VCR like equipment which required cassette tapes. The new
systems will use a digital recording system. This will allow officers to
record in higher definition with better quality and without pressing a
"record" button. This improvement will allow for more secure evidence in
court. Equipment for this project has been purchased and is operational.
The Edwin Byrne Justice Assistance Grant is granted by the federal
government and is distributed to departments based on Uniform Crime
Reporting Statistics (Visit www.fbi.gov for
Uniform Crime Reports). Amount awarded by grant: $20,908.00. This
grant was jointly applied for and granted to both the Stephenville Police
Department and Erath County Sherriff's Department. Erath County Sherriff's
Department was awarded $11,912.00. This grant will be used to update
portable radios to an interopable radio system mandated by the state for
statewide communications. Equipment for this project has been purchased and
is operational.
The Stimulus Grant awarded to the North Texas Council of Governments allowed
for $146,598.00 to be allocated for Stephenville Police Department. This
grant will provide funding for computers to be placed in patrol cars. Mobile
work stations will increase efficiency and time spent on patrol. In car
computer stations will significantly impact response times and operations.
This project is in its beginning stages at present.
